Signs of Computer Vision

Eye Care for Signs of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

Computer Vision Syndrome is known by a few different names: digital eye strain, computers vision, or the acronym CVS. Basically, this syndrome refers to the extended use of digital devices such as cell phones, laptops, desktops, e-readers, and tablets. The level of eye discomfort that people experience is directly correlated to the amount of uninterrupted time that they spend using digital devices.

Causes and Symptoms of Computers Vision Syndrome

If you suspect that you may have CVS, it’s a good idea to seek optometry care. We can help you in our Wilmette office with therapy for CVS. In the meantime, here are some symptoms that people commonly associate with digital eye strain:

  • Dry eyes

  • Headaches

  • Eyestrain

  • Blurred vision

  • Neck and shoulder pain

Some causes of Computer Vision include:

  • Poorly-lit areas

  • Glare on digital device screens

  • Improper posture while on devices

  • Viewing distances are too close or too far away

  • Other vision problems that need to be corrected by an optometrist could heighten CVS

  • Any or all of these could work in combination to create the symptoms

Solutions for Digital Eye Strain

Many times, computer vision strain can easily be corrected by taking a break from your computer. In some cases, your vision could become worse from prolonged use, or your symptoms will continue to recur and possibly get worse during future use.

The 20-20-20 rule is a basic rule for working on digital devices a prolonged time. Every 20 minutes, take a break and focus on something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Another preventative would be to make sure you have adequate lighting with no glare on your screen.
