New Vision Optical Wilmette Treats Cataracts

Is your vision becoming cloudy now that you are over 50 years of age? It could be cataracts. New Vision Eyecare is here for you. We have been helping the people of the picturesque Sammamish area to see the world more clearly for years and we can help you too. What are Cataracts? We are so happy that you asked!

What are Cataracts?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens which is immediately behind the pupil and works with the cornea to refract and focus light on the retina. When this clouding occurs, light is prohibited from passing through the lens and into the eye which causes vision in that eye to blur and distort.

Causes & Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts form on the lens from a build-up of proteins over time. That is why they are most commonly found in older adults. In fact, nearly 50 percent of the people in the United States over the age of 65 have developed a cataract in at least one eye. Furthermore, nearly 100 percent of Americans over 75 years of age have a cataract in one or both eyes.

A mild cataract will often cause no vision disturbance or other symptoms. In fact, they may never become a problem at all. However, more often they will progress until they reach the point where they require treatment to correct the condition and return the eye(s) to unclouded vision.

How Our Sammamish Optometrists Can Help

A visit to our Sammamish optometrists is necessary any time your vision is impeded. That includes the cloudiness of cataracts. With careful examination, we can then recommend whether treatment is possible or if surgery is needed to correct the issue.

Cataract surgery is the most common surgery performed in the United States today. It involves incising the front of the eye and making a spherical hole in the thin membrane that encloses the lens (anterior capsule) to access the lens directly. The lens is then broken into small pieces which are removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). This IOL is a clear implant that restores vision by replacing the lens.

After cataract surgery, the eye generally heals quickly without needing stitches. Our Sammamish optometry staff will help you through this healing process and speed you along the road to recovery and restored vision.
