Signs of Computer Vision

Treating Computer Vision Syndrome

Have you experienced eye strain after spending long hours using a computer? Rather than suffering through the discomfort, contact your Wilmette optometrist for comprehensive eye care. At New Vision Optical Wilmette, we offer optometry exams and provide high-quality treatment for conditions such as computer vision syndrome.

What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome, or CVS, occurs when your eyes repetitively follow the same motion, which creates a condition similar to carpal tunnel syndrome. The symptoms of computer vision syndrome include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Back pain
  • Irritated eyes

Managing the Symptoms of CVS

Changing the lighting around your workspace can help. It’s important to avoid glare, so if a window casts unfavorable light, simply block sunlight by closing the curtains or shades. Are the overhead lights too strong? A dimmer switch could be an easy fix. A desk lamp could also be the solution for better lighting at your work desk.

You may also want to adjust your computer monitor, about 20-28 inches from your face is ideal. And you should make adjustments if you’re straining your neck or back. If you don't have a good ergonomic desk chair, investing in one is a smart choice.

Other tips for managing symptoms of CVS include:

Take breaks. Are you following the 20-20-20 rule? Simply take a break every 20 minutes and look away for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away.

Adjust your computer settings. Play around with the brightness and contrast of your computer screen to see what works best for you. You can also download a free app to keep the screen brightness at an optimal level.

Use eye drops. If you have dry eyes, keep a bottle of nonprescription eye drops in your desk drawer and use them when necessary.

Have regular eye checkups. You may need glasses or contacts. You may also want to ask your Wilmette optometrist about special glasses to wear when you’re doing computer work.
