Signs of Macular Degeneration

Signs of Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the deterioration of the center portion of your retina. The retina’s purpose is to focus your vision. It helps with reading, driving, and seeing objects. The chances of being diagnosed with this condition increase with age. There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. Dry is the most common type, affecting 90% of macular degeneration patients. The disease is believed to be hereditary and scientists are not sure what causes it. If you suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of macular degeneration, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with a doctor of optometry at New Vision Optical Wilmette.

The Symptoms of Macular Degeneration:

There are several symptoms of macular degeneration, some are more noticeable than others.

Trouble with Changing Light Level

Your eyes will struggle to adjust to different levels of light. Your eyes will have issues when going from a darker setting to a lighter setting or vice versa. You may also need stronger light for regular tasks like reading a book or cleaning around the house. Everything may seem darker around you.

Loss of Depth Perception

You might have issues with judging distances, leading to issues with walking and going up and down stairs. This could lead to tripping over yourself. This can also affect driving as you’ll have difficulty telling how close or far a car is from you or the distance of a traffic light.

Distorted Vision

Your visual field may become blurry and you’ll have problems watching TV and recognizing people’s faces. This usually occurs as the disease progresses.
