What Does 20/20 Vision Actually Mean?

Our Guide to 20/20 Vision with Our Optometrist

Let’s start with what it doesn’t mean. First, 20/20 is not a perfect vision. Instead, 20/20 is considered normal vision. It simply means someone with 20/20 vision can see what the average person could see 20 feet from the vision chart. Our team at New Vision Optical Wilmette answers those questions and more below.

20/20 Doesn’t Include Other Factors

Even if you can see clearly from 20 feet away, you can only see well in some ways. This number does not take things like peripheral vision, depth perception, color blindness, and more. Instead, it goes explicitly by how well you can see straight ahead. Of course, this is not a bad thing, but it’s not an all-inclusive scoring of your vision.

Is 20/20 the Highest Vision?

Not at all. Some people have 20/10 and 20/15 vision, meaning they can see something 20 feet away that others would need to be 10 or 15 feet away to see. However, 20/20 is a grand vision foundation, so corrective lenses aim to get you to that point.

What Prevents 20/20 Vision?

Several things can interfere with your vision, with refractive errors being the most common. These include astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia, and presbyopia. Other potential factors include diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, diseases that impact the cornea, thyroid issues, and more. Your optometry specialist can work with you to determine the root cause of your vision trouble and recommend the best course of treatment.
